Mobile dog grooming (van)

A mobile groomer's full groom costs £45 to £55 across all sizes, the middle half of 91 prices published by 13 mobile groomers in October 2026, against £45 to £65 for salons. That is a small sample, so ask each van for its price for your dog; a few add a call-out fee.

What this covers

What it costs. A mobile full groom costs £45 to £55, the middle half of 91 prices published by 13 mobile groomers in October 2026, against £45 to £65 for salons. Full cost breakdown.

What the job covers

  • A full groom for a cockapoo in a van parked on the drive
  • Bath, dry and de-shed for a Labrador without a car journey
  • A short, quiet groom for an elderly dog that struggles in a busy salon
  • Nail clip and tidy for a second dog at the same address
  • Regular six-weekly grooms booked on the same day each time

What is involved

A mobile groomer works from a van fitted out as a small salon, with a raised bath and hot water, a grooming table, a high-velocity dryer, clippers and scissors. The van parks outside the house and the dog is groomed inside it, one dog at a time, usually in one and a half to three hours, then handed back at the door. The owner does not drive anywhere, and the dog does not share a room with other dogs or wait in a crate. A smaller number of mobile groomers work inside the customer's home instead of from a van, and these mostly take small and medium dogs.

That suits some dogs better than others. Nervous dogs, elderly dogs with stiff joints, dogs that are sick in the car and dogs that react to other dogs often cope well with a van. Very large or heavy-coated dogs are harder: a van's bath and table have weight and size limits, and some mobile groomers state that they no longer take giant breeds or large doodles. Most vans are run by one groomer, so the diary fills weeks ahead, and in very cold or very hot weather the van has to be heated or cooled before the groom.

The practical check is the space outside your house. A van needs to park close to the door, often in a space the length of two cars, and many need a standard socket within reach of a cable; others carry their own water tank and generator and need nothing from you. Parking permits and charges are usually for the customer to arrange. Also check where the groomer is based: several national websites take bookings for every town in a county and pass them to whoever is nearest, which is not a problem in itself, but you should know who will arrive.

Choosing someone for the job

Ask what the van needs from you: where it can park, whether it needs a socket or a tap, and how far from the door it can be. Ask whether the price includes travel, whether there is a call-out fee, and what a nail clip on its own costs. Ask whether they take your dog's size and coat, since some vans stop at large breeds. Ask what they do if the dog will not settle, and whether they groom in very hot or very cold weather. And ask whether the person you book with is the person who grooms, or a booking service passing the job on.

Common questions

How much does a mobile dog groomer cost?

The 91 full groom prices published by 13 mobile groomers have a middle half of £45 to £55 (October 2026). For a small dog the middle half is £40 to £46, from 9 prices. A bath and brush from a van is £35 to £45.

Is mobile dog grooming more expensive than a salon?

Not on the prices groomers publish, though mobile prices are few. The middle half for a mobile full groom is £45 to £55, against £45 to £65 for 390 salon prices. A nail clip on its own is £15 to £20 from a van, from 5 prices, against £10 to £15 overall.

What does a mobile dog groomer need from me?

Somewhere to park close to your door, often the length of two cars, and in many cases a standard socket for power. Some vans also use an outside tap, while others carry their own water and generator. Ask before the first visit.

Is mobile grooming better for nervous dogs?

Often, because the dog is groomed one to one with no other dogs, no car journey and no waiting area. Some dogs are still unsettled by the van itself. Tell the groomer what upsets your dog when you book.

Can mobile groomers groom large dogs?

Many can, but some state a size or weight limit and do not take giant breeds, large doodles or standard poodles, because of the size of the bath and table. Check before booking a Newfoundland, Bernese or large doodle.
