Is That Mobile Groomer Local? How to Check Who Comes
Some mobile grooming websites are national brands with local operators. Most are independents. Four checks show where a groomer is based and who you are booking with.
How can you tell whether a mobile groomer is local?
Run four checks: look at the phone number and the small print, check the business on Companies House, ask where the van is kept, and ask who will groom your dog. Most mobile groomers are independent sole traders working from home. Some trade under a national franchise brand, where a local operator runs a territory. Both are legitimate; what matters is who arrives, from how far, and who you are contracting with.
Why is this a question at all?
Several national franchise networks for mobile dog grooming operate in the UK. A franchise website may show a page for every town, each with the brand's national look and often a shared or non-geographic phone number. Behind each territory is a local operator, often a sole trader who owns the van and has bought the right to the brand in an area. Some territories are unsold, and an enquiry may be passed to a neighbouring operator further away.
How do you run the four checks?
1. Phone number and small print. A mobile number or the town's own dialling code suggests a local operator. A national 03 or 0800 number, or a terms page naming a different company, means the enquiry goes to a central office first.
2. Companies House. A limited company's registered office and directors are public. A franchise operator usually trades through their own company, under licence.
3. Where the van is kept. Ask. A groomer based ten minutes away will say so.
4. Who grooms your dog. Ask for the groomer's name, and make sure your booking and any deposit are with the business that will turn up.
How does this site show where a groomer is based?
doggrooming.trade lists a groomer under a town as based in that town only where there is evidence it is based there, such as a trading address or the town's own dialling code. Mobile groomers based elsewhere whose stated radius includes a town appear separately as also covers. Where several websites lead to one business, it is listed once. The site does not rank businesses or say one model is better than another.
Common questions
Is a franchise groomer worse than an independent?
Not in itself. A franchise operator may be local and experienced. Ask who will groom your dog and what they hold.
Why do some grooming websites have a page for every town?
National brands and some enquiry websites create town pages. The groomer who serves your town may be based some distance away.
Who should I pay a deposit to?
The business named on your booking, and that should be the business that will groom your dog.
