Hand stripping for wire coats

Hand stripping costs £61 to £82 for a small wire-coated dog, £70 to £100 for a medium dog and £81 to £134 for a large dog such as an Airedale: the middle half of published UK prices, October 2026. Groomers who charge by time ask £30 to £44 an hour, and a full strip takes two to three and a half hours.

What this covers

What the job covers

  • Hand stripping a border terrier's jacket every 8 to 12 weeks
  • A full strip for an Airedale whose coat has blown
  • Rolling the coat on a wire fox terrier kept in show condition
  • Stripping the jacket of a show cocker spaniel
  • Bringing back a wire coat on a schnauzer that has been clipped for years

What is involved

Hand stripping removes the dead outer coat of a wire-haired dog by pulling it out in the direction of growth, with finger and thumb or a blunt stripping knife, rather than cutting it. A wire hair stops growing once it is mature and then loosens in the follicle; pulled at that stage it comes out easily, and the new coat grows back harsh, weatherproof and the right colour. Clipping instead cuts the dead hair off and leaves the root in place, and after a few clips the coat turns soft, woolly and paler.

The breeds most often stripped are border, cairn, Norfolk, Norwich, wire fox and Lakeland terriers, Airedales, schnauzers, wire-haired dachshunds and West Highland terriers, and the jacket of a show cocker spaniel is also stripped. Groomers price it by breed or by the hour, because a coat kept rolling with a maintenance strip every 8 to 12 weeks takes far less time than one left for six months or clipped before. The Border Terrier Club says a Border needs hand stripping about twice a year, and several groomers separate that full strip from a cheaper maintenance strip for dogs that return within the window. The middle half of 9 published border terrier prices is £65 to £69; Airedale prices are too few to give a range.

Not every groomer strips. It is slow, physically hard work, and many salons offer it only on request or after seeing the dog. Ask whether they strip by hand or use a carding tool or a knife that cuts, how long they need for your dog, and when the bath is: some bath the same day, others book it a week or two later to spare the skin. Expect the coat to look short and patchy straight after a full strip; it grows through in a few weeks.

Choosing someone for the job

Ask whether they hand strip at all, and whether that means finger and thumb or a stripping knife, rather than a carding tool or a clipper finish. Ask how long they will need for your dog and whether they charge by the hour or by the job, and what the difference is between a full and a maintenance strip. Ask when they bath the dog, and how often they would want to see it to keep the coat rolling. If the dog has been clipped before, ask whether they think the coat can be brought back and how many sessions that might take.

Common questions

How much does hand stripping cost?

The middle half of published prices in October 2026 is £61 to £82 for a small dog, £70 to £100 for a medium dog and £81 to £134 for a large dog. For a border terrier it is £65 to £69, from 9 prices. Groomers who charge by time ask £30 to £44 an hour.

Does hand stripping hurt dogs?

On a coat that is ready, the dead hair is loose in the follicle and comes out with little resistance, and most dogs tolerate it well. Sensitive areas such as the belly and inner legs are usually trimmed rather than stripped. A coat stripped before it is ready, or too much at once, can be uncomfortable.

How often should a border terrier be hand stripped?

The Border Terrier Club says Borders need hand stripping about twice a year, once the coat has blown. Many owners instead keep the coat rolling with a maintenance strip every 8 to 12 weeks, which is quicker each time. Leaving it much longer turns a maintenance strip into a full one.

What is the difference between hand stripping and clipping?

Stripping pulls out the dead hair from the root, so a new harsh, coloured coat grows in. Clipping cuts the hair and leaves the dead root, so the coat softens and fades over time. Clipping is quicker and cheaper; stripping keeps the coat's texture.

Can you hand strip a dog that has been clipped?

Often, but it can take several sessions over months to bring a wire coat back, and some coats never fully recover their texture. Ask a groomer to look at the coat first.

Which breeds need hand stripping?

Wire-coated breeds: border, cairn, Norfolk, Norwich, wire fox, Lakeland and West Highland terriers, Airedales, schnauzers and wire-haired dachshunds. Show cocker spaniels and some setters are also stripped. Pet owners can choose to clip instead.
