Dematting and shave-downs
Dematting is charged as a surcharge or by time at most UK groomers: the middle half of 20 published flat matting charges is £10 to £16, and of 6 published time rates £10 to £14 per 15 minutes (October 2026). When matting is tight to the skin, groomers clip the coat short instead, which is quicker and kinder to the dog.
What this covers
Typical price. a flat surcharge of £10 to £16 (the middle half of 20 published charges, October 2026), or £10 to £14 per 15 minutes by time
What the job covers
- Brushing out knots behind the ears and in the armpits of a cockapoo
- A short clip-off for a doodle matted close to the skin
- Dematting a long-coated dog's legs and tail before a bath
- Clipping out a matted coat on an elderly dog that cannot stand for long
- Setting a shorter grooming schedule after a shave-down
What is involved
Mats form where hair rubs or stays damp: behind the ears, under the collar and harness, in the armpits, on the legs and around the tail. Loose tangles can be teased out with detangling spray, a slicker brush, a comb and a mat splitter. Once a mat has tightened against the skin it pulls every time the dog moves, traps moisture, and can hide sore or broken skin underneath, and brushing it out hurts.
Groomers work to a welfare rule often summed up as humanity before vanity: if brushing out a mat would hurt the dog, they clip under it instead, which usually means a short clip all over or on the affected areas. Several cite the Animal Welfare Act 2006, some cap dematting at 15 to 45 minutes, and most ask the owner to sign a matted coat form before a shave-down, because clipping close to the skin can show redness or nicks that the mats were hiding. Poodle crosses, doodles, bichons, shih tzus and long-coated spaniels mat most often, especially while the puppy coat changes, between about six and twelve months.
The fix is time between grooms. Poodles need a groomer every 4 to 8 weeks, poodle crosses every 6 to 12 and long silky coats every 6 to 8, and brushing at home down to the skin with a comb, not just over the surface. If your dog arrives matted, ask the groomer to show you the mats and to quote before starting, and ask whether they recommend a shave-down and a shorter schedule while the coat grows back. Where matting covers sores or the skin looks infected, the dog may need a vet first.
Choosing someone for the job
Ask how the groomer charges for matting: by the quarter hour, a flat fee, or a shave-down price, and whether there is a cap on dematting time. Ask them to show you the mats and quote before they start. Ask whether they will clip the coat short if the mats are tight, and to explain what the skin may look like afterwards. And ask what interval they recommend to stop it happening again, and what comb and brush to use at home.

Common questions
How much does dematting cost?
The middle half of 20 published flat matting surcharges is £10 to £16, and of 6 time rates £10 to £14 per 15 minutes (October 2026). One groomer prices a full shave-down as its own appointment at £70 to £100 by size.
Why did the groomer shave my dog instead of brushing out the mats?
Mats tight to the skin hurt to brush out, and groomers put the dog's comfort first. Clipping under the mats is quicker and kinder, and some groomers cap dematting time for that reason.
How do I stop my dog's coat matting?
Brush down to the skin, then comb through, focusing on behind the ears, armpits, collar line and legs. Book a groom every 4 to 8 weeks for a poodle and every 6 to 12 for a poodle cross, and keep the coat shorter if brushing at home is hard.
Is it cruel to leave a dog matted?
Severe matting pulls on the skin, traps moisture and can hide sores, so it causes discomfort. Owners have a duty under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to meet their dog's needs, which groomers often cite when they clip a matted coat.
