Breed-standard styling and scissoring

Where groomers price it separately, a hand-scissored or breed-standard groom costs £54 to £100, the middle half of 14 published prices from 5 groomers in October 2026, across all sizes. Most groomers include a breed trim in the full groom price for the breed rather than charge for it separately.

What this covers

Typical price. £54 to £100 across all sizes (the middle half of 14 published prices from 5 groomers, October 2026); too few to give a range by size

What the job covers

  • Breed-standard scissoring on a bichon frise
  • A show-style outline trim for a cocker spaniel
  • A scissored teddy bear face and legs on a cockapoo
  • Lamb clip or continental trim on a poodle
  • An Asian fusion style with a rounded head and ears on a small breed

What is involved

Breed styling means cutting a dog to the outline set for its breed, or to a recognised style, mostly with scissors rather than a clipper blade. A poodle in a lamb or continental clip, a bichon scissored into its rounded shape, a cocker spaniel with a tidy skirt and feathering, a schnauzer with its eyebrows and beard, or a West Highland terrier's round head: each takes a skilled hand and more time than a short all-over clip. Asian fusion styles, with rounded faces, ears and legs, sit in the same category.

Most groomers do not price it separately. A full groom for a poodle, bichon or schnauzer usually includes a breed trim at the owner's request, and the price list reflects the breed. Where it is priced separately, it appears as a full scissor groom, a breed-standard outline trim, a show groom, or a surcharge on a standard full groom. The extra cost reflects time: hand scissoring a bichon properly can take an hour longer than clipping it short.

A breed style also depends on the coat being kept in condition. A matted coat cannot be scissored into shape, and the groomer will clip it short first, so a style is something built over several grooms on a schedule of 4 to 8 weeks for a poodle or bichon. Bring a photo of what you want, and ask the groomer how they would keep that style for your dog's coat and lifestyle, since a show outline needs more upkeep at home than a short pet trim.

Choosing someone for the job

Bring a photo of the style you want and ask whether the groomer has done it on your breed before, and whether they can show you examples. Ask whether the price is their normal full groom or a separate scissored price, and how much longer it takes. Ask how often the dog needs to come back to keep the shape, and what brushing you need to do at home. If you want a show trim rather than a pet trim, ask whether the groomer has show grooming experience.

Common questions

How much does a breed-standard groom cost?

Where groomers price it separately, the middle half of 14 published prices is £54 to £100 (October 2026), across all sizes. One groomer adds £15 to £25 to a full groom instead. Most include a breed trim in the full groom price.

What is the difference between a breed trim and a pet trim?

A breed trim follows the outline set for the breed, usually with a lot of scissor work. A pet trim is a shorter, simpler cut, often clipped all over, chosen for ease of upkeep. A pet trim is quicker and cheaper.

What is an Asian fusion dog groom?

A style with rounded, often exaggerated shapes to the head, ears, muzzle and legs, cut mostly by hand. Groomers who offer it usually price it above a standard full groom.

How often does a scissored style need redoing?

Every 4 to 8 weeks for a poodle or bichon, and every 6 to 8 for long silky coats, to keep the shape and stop knots forming. Brushing at home between grooms matters more for a scissored style than a short clip.
