Large and giant breed grooming

A full groom for a giant breed costs £69 to £110 and a bath and brush £46 to £88, the middle half of published UK prices in October 2026, against £52 to £79 and £39 to £54 for a large dog. Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, Bernese mountain dogs and Old English sheepdogs are often quoted after assessment.

What this covers

Typical price. £69 to £110 for a giant breed's full groom and £46 to £88 for a bath and brush (the middle half of published prices, October 2026); £112 to £128 for a full groom in London

What the job covers

  • A full bath, dry and de-shed for a Newfoundland in moult
  • A full groom and trim for a Bernese mountain dog
  • Clipping a standard poodle or large doodle
  • A bath and brush for a Great Dane using a ramped bath
  • A tidy and coat brush-out for an Old English sheepdog

What is involved

A large or giant dog takes more of everything: more water and shampoo, more time drying, and more time brushing out a coat that can be several inches deep. A Newfoundland or Bernese in full coat can take three to five hours, much of it under a high-velocity dryer. Groomers need a walk-in or ramped bath, a table that lowers to the floor so the dog does not have to jump or be lifted, and a dryer strong enough to reach the skin through a double coat.

Not every groomer takes them. Some home salons and mobile vans state a size or weight limit because the bath, the table or the van floor cannot take a 60-kilo dog safely, and some salons book giant breeds only on certain days or for existing clients. Big doodles, standard poodles and Old English sheepdogs combine size with coats that mat, so they cost more than a smooth-coated dog of the same weight. A Great Dane or mastiff has little coat to cut and is priced closer to a large bath.

Ask whether the groomer takes your breed and weight, whether the table lowers, and how long the appointment will be. Ask for a quote after an assessment rather than relying on a 'from' price, which at the giant end can vary by £40 or more depending on coat, and ask whether a deposit is needed, as several salons take one for long appointments. Book well ahead before spring, when double-coated breeds moult and diaries fill.

Choosing someone for the job

Ask whether the groomer takes your breed and your dog's weight, and whether their bath and table suit a dog that size: a ramp or walk-in bath and a table that lowers. Ask how long the groom takes and whether you will be called when the dog is ready. Ask for a quote after an assessment, whether a deposit is needed, and what the charge is if the coat is in heavy moult or matted. For a giant double coat, ask how often they recommend a de-shed between full grooms.

Common questions

How much does it cost to groom a large dog?

The middle half of published prices in October 2026 is £52 to £79 for a large dog's full groom and £69 to £110 for a giant breed. A bath and brush is £39 to £54 for a large dog and £46 to £88 for a giant.

How much does it cost to groom a Newfoundland?

Too few groomers publish a Newfoundland price to give a range: 4 in the data. Most quote after seeing the coat, especially in moult, and the middle half for any giant breed's full groom is £69 to £110.

Why do some groomers not take large dogs?

Their bath, table or van may not be safe for a dog of 50 kilos or more, and a giant groom can take a whole morning. Some home salons and mobile vans set a size limit for that reason.

How long does it take to groom a giant breed?

Three to five hours is common for a full groom on a Newfoundland, Bernese or Old English sheepdog, much of it drying the coat. A bath and brush alone can still take two to three hours.
