Mobile or Salon Dog Grooming: Cost, Time and Which Suits

On published prices a mobile full groom costs about the same as a salon one, though mobile prices are few. A van comes to your door with one dog at a time; a salon may take several dogs at once and needs you to drop off and collect.

What is the difference between mobile and salon grooming?

A mobile groomer brings a converted van with a bath, water, dryer and table to your home and grooms one dog at a time outside your door. A salon grooms at fixed premises, a shop unit or a home salon, and you drop your dog off and collect it. On the prices groomers publish, the two cost about the same: the 91 full groom prices from 13 mobile groomers have a middle half of £45 to £55, against £45 to £65 for 390 salon prices (October 2026). Mobile prices are few, so ask each groomer.

Who does mobile grooming suit?

Dogs who find car journeys, waiting areas or other dogs stressful. Elderly dogs, and owners without a car or with limited time. Households with several dogs, groomed one after another on the drive. Owners who want to see where their dog is groomed. A mobile appointment is also usually shorter in total, because there is no waiting for collection: a typical small or medium dog is done in about 90 minutes to two hours.

Who does a salon suit?

Owners looking for a groomer with specific skills (hand stripping, show trims, giant breeds) who may only work from premises. Dogs who travel well. Owners without off-street parking or in streets where a van cannot stop. Salons can also take larger dogs more easily, with walk-in baths and lifting tables.

How do the costs compare over a year?

The published figures show no consistent gap between mobile and salon prices: the difference is between groomers, not between the two ways of working, so get a price from each for your dog. Against any difference, mobile grooming saves two car journeys per visit and the time spent dropping off and collecting, which for some owners is worth more. For a smooth-coated dog bathed every 8 to 12 weeks, the difference is small either way.

What about home salons?

Many groomers work from a converted garage or garden room at their own home. They are salons in every practical sense, often one dog at a time, and are a large share of UK groomers. On this site they are shown as home salons, located by town and the first half of the postcode, not a street address.

Common questions

Is mobile dog grooming more expensive?

Not on published prices: the middle half for a mobile full groom is £45 to £55, against £45 to £65 for a salon, from 91 and 390 prices. A few vans add a call-out fee.

Do mobile groomers need my electricity or water?

Some vans are self-contained; others need an outside socket. Ask when booking.

Is mobile grooming less stressful for dogs?

For many dogs, yes: no car journey, no waiting area and no other dogs. Some dogs settle equally well in a quiet salon.
