Do You Need a Licence to Groom Dogs? UK Rules by Nation

No. As of October 2026, dog grooming is not a licensable activity in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and no qualification is legally required. Boarding and day care are licensable, and welfare law applies to every groomer.

Dog Grooming Qualifications Explained: Level 2 to Level 4

No qualification is legally required to groom dogs in the UK. The recognised ones are Ofqual-regulated Level 2 and 3 diplomas from City & Guilds, iPET Network and others, a Level 4, and the ICMG master groomer certification.

Dog Grooming Insurance: Public Liability, CCC and the Law

Only employers' liability is a legal requirement, at £5 million once you employ anyone. Public liability and care, custody and control cover are what protect a groomer when a dog or a client is hurt.

Starting a Mobile Dog Grooming Business: 8 Steps

No licence is needed to groom dogs from a van, but training, a properly converted van, insurance, tax registration and a plan for waste water are. Eight steps, with the figures that matter.

Running a Home Dog Grooming Salon: Planning and Rates

Grooming from home needs no licence, but planning permission and business rates can apply once clients visit, the space is converted, or neighbours are affected. A guide to the questions, not legal advice.

Choosing a Dog Grooming Course: What to Check First

A Level 3 dog grooming course commonly costs £3,500 to £7,000. Check the Ofqual number, the practical hours, how many dogs you will groom and who assesses you. This site sells no courses.

How to get listed

Send the business name, the town you are based in, a phone number, a website if you have one, whether you work from a salon, from home or from a van, and the services you offer. If you hold a qualification and want it shown, include a link to the certificate or the issuer record.

How we decide the order

How recently we checked the listing's public details, then how complete they are: a listing with a phone number, a website and an address sits above one with a phone number alone. Ties go in alphabetical order. A paid check or plan never changes the date or the order. Nothing about position is for sale.

Premium and free tools

Enquiries by email are free once you claim your listing. Premium, £12 a month, adds your own price list, photos, availability and rebook reminders, and a yearly check by a person on your published details; the Owner verified badge appears once that check is done and does not change your position. Free for everyone: the matted coat consent form. Already listed? Claim your listing.
