Full dog groom

A full groom costs £40 to £52 for a small dog, £45 to £60 for a medium dog, £52 to £79 for a large dog and £69 to £110 for a giant breed: the middle half of 533 published UK prices, October 2026. It covers a bath, drying, a clip or scissor cut, nails, ears and a hygiene trim, and London prices run about 60% higher.

What this covers

What it costs. A full groom costs £40 to £52 for a small dog, £45 to £60 for a medium dog, £52 to £79 for a large dog and £69 to £110 for a giant breed, the middle half of 533 published UK prices in October 2026. Full cost breakdown.

What the job covers

  • Bath, dry, clip and nails for a cockapoo every six to eight weeks
  • Scissored face and feet with a body clip on a shih tzu
  • A short summer clip on a springer spaniel, with feathers tidied
  • Nail trim, ear check and hygiene clip as part of every full groom
  • Brushing out and re-styling a labradoodle kept long between visits

What is involved

A full groom is the whole job in one appointment. The groomer checks the skin, ears and coat, bathes the dog in a shampoo suited to the coat, dries it with a high-velocity dryer and brushes and combs it through to the skin. Then comes the cut, with clippers, scissors or both, to a breed style or a shorter pet trim agreed at drop-off. Nails are clipped, ears checked and wiped, pads cleared and the hygiene area trimmed. Most groomers book two to three hours for a small or medium dog and up to four for a large, heavily coated one.

The coat decides what the groom involves and what it costs. Poodle crosses such as cockapoos and cavapoos grow hair continuously and matt behind the ears, under the collar and in the armpits, so they need a full groom every 6 to 12 weeks, at the shorter end for a curly or long coat; the middle half of 37 published cockapoo and cavapoo prices is £50 to £60. Wire coats such as border terriers can be clipped, but clipping softens the coat and dulls the colour, which is why many owners book hand stripping instead. Double coats on huskies, collies and German shepherds are rarely clipped short; for them a full groom is a bath, a thorough de-shed and a tidy of feathers and feet. Smooth coats such as Labradors need no cut, and several groomers price their 'smooth coat full groom' close to a bath and brush.

Almost every published price is a 'from' figure for a dog on a regular schedule that arrives brushed. A coat left well past its usual interval, or matted close to the skin, costs extra by the quarter hour or is clipped short, and a groomer should say so at drop-off rather than at collection. Ask for the price for your breed and the coat as it is today, how long the dog will be there, and whether it waits in a crate between stages. Large and giant dogs, and doodles of any size, vary the most, so get a quote after the groomer has seen the dog.

Choosing someone for the job

Ask what a full groom includes at that groomer, because nails, ears and a hygiene trim are standard at most but not all. Ask for a price for your breed and the coat as it is now, not the 'from' figure, and what the charge for matting is. Ask how long the dog will be there, whether it is dried by hand or left in a cabinet dryer, and whether dogs wait in crates. Ask what grooming qualification the groomer holds, such as a City & Guilds or iPET Network Level 3, and whether they groom one dog at a time. If the coat needs a groom every six to eight weeks, book the next one before you leave.

Common questions

How much does a full dog groom cost in the UK?

The middle half of published prices in October 2026 is £40 to £52 for a small dog, £45 to £60 for a medium dog, £52 to £79 for a large dog and £69 to £110 for a giant breed. London runs higher, at £58 to £75 for a small dog. Matting or an overdue coat adds to the price.

How often should my dog have a full groom?

Poodles and bichons every 4 to 8 weeks, poodle crosses such as cockapoos every 6 to 12 weeks, and long silky coats such as shih tzus and spaniels every 6 to 8. Smooth coats need no cut: a bath and nail trim every 8 to 12 weeks, or as needed. Groomers set their prices on a coat kept to its interval.

How long does a full dog groom take?

Two to three hours for most small and medium dogs, and three to four for a large or heavily coated dog. A matted coat or a dog that needs breaks takes longer. Many groomers ring when the dog is ready rather than give a fixed collection time.

What is included in a full groom?

A bath, a full dry, a brush and comb-out, a clip or scissor cut, nail clipping, an ear check and wipe, a pad trim and a hygiene trim. Some groomers also include a tooth brush; others charge extra for it. Ask for the list, because names vary between groomers. Teeth: brushing is something owners and groomers can both do to keep a dog's mouth healthy. Anything that needs a general anaesthetic or sedation, including scaling and polishing, should only be done by a qualified vet.

Why did my groomer charge more than the price list?

Published prices are almost all 'from' figures for a coat in good condition. Matting, a coat several weeks overdue, fleas, or a dog that needs two people all add time, charged as a surcharge or by the quarter hour. A groomer should tell you before starting, not at collection.
