Puppy introduction groom

A puppy groom costs £25 to £36, the middle half of 97 published UK puppy prices in October 2026, and most of those are single introduction sessions. Most groomers take puppies from 12 to 16 weeks, once vaccinations are complete, up to about six months old.

What this covers

What it costs. A puppy groom costs £25 to £36, the middle half of 97 published UK puppy prices in October 2026, most of them single introduction sessions. Full cost breakdown.

What the job covers

  • A first bath, dry and nail clip for a 14-week cockapoo
  • Three short introduction visits four weeks apart before a first full groom
  • Face, feet and hygiene trim for a shih tzu puppy
  • Table and handling practice for a border terrier puppy before stripping starts
  • A salon visit with no grooming, to meet the dryer and the table

What is involved

A puppy groom is about getting the dog used to being groomed rather than about the haircut. It is usually a gentle bath, a towel dry and a blow-dry on a low setting, a brush through, a trim around the eyes, feet and hygiene area, and a first nail clip, with breaks. The groomer lets the puppy hear the dryer and feel the clippers on its body without cutting much, and stops before the puppy is tired. Sessions are often limited to an hour.

It matters most for breeds that will need cutting for life: cockapoos, cavapoos, poodles, shih tzus, bichons, schnauzers and doodles. A dog that first meets clippers at eight months with a matted adolescent coat has a harder first groom than one that has had three short visits by six months. For wire-coated puppies such as border terriers, the early sessions get the puppy used to standing on a table and being handled before hand stripping starts. Smooth-coated puppies benefit too, mostly for nail clipping.

Most groomers will only take a puppy after its vaccinations are finished, often a week or two after the last one, and many set an upper age, commonly four to six months, after which the puppy is priced as an adult. Some offer a free or low-cost visit just to see the salon, and some sell courses of three to five sessions with set gaps of two to four weeks. Ask what age they start, how long each session lasts, and whether the price drops if you book the course.

Choosing someone for the job

Ask what age they take puppies from and how long after the last vaccination, and up to what age the puppy price applies. Ask how long each session lasts and what is actually done: bath, dry, nails, face and feet, or a first light clip. Ask whether you can stay for the first visit, whether the puppy will be crated at any point, and whether they recommend a course of visits and at what gap. If your puppy is a breed that will need regular cuts, ask what the adult price will be so you know what follows.

Common questions

When should a puppy have its first groom?

Most groomers take puppies from about 12 to 16 weeks, once the vaccination course is finished. Starting before six months, while the coat is short and the puppy is still learning, makes later grooms easier. Some groomers offer a no-groom visit earlier to meet the salon.

How much is a puppy's first groom?

The middle half of 97 published puppy prices is £25 to £36 (October 2026). Courses of several sessions run £45 to £140, and a few groomers offer the first visit free.

What happens at a puppy introduction groom?

A gentle bath, a towel and low blow-dry, a brush through, a trim around the eyes, feet and hygiene area, and a nail clip. The groomer lets the puppy hear the dryer and feel the clippers without cutting much. Sessions are short and include breaks.

Does a puppy need a haircut at its first groom?

No. The point of the first visits is handling, noise and the routine, not a style. A first light clip usually comes at the third or fourth visit, or once the puppy is four to six months old.
