Cockapoo Grooming: Coat Types, Intervals and Typical Cost
A cockapoo full groom costs £50 to £60, the middle half of 37 published prices, and is needed every 6 to 12 weeks. The coat can be flat, wavy or curly, and the change from puppy to adult coat is when matting starts.
How should a cockapoo be groomed?
A cockapoo needs a full groom every 6 to 12 weeks, at the shorter end for a curly or long coat, and brushing to the skin at home two or three times a week. The Cockapoo Club of GB suggests a professional wash and clip about every three months, with grooming at home in between. Where groomers publish a cockapoo or cavapoo price, the middle half is £50 to £60, from 37 prices checked in October 2026. The coat is a mix of cocker spaniel and poodle, and which parent it takes after decides how much work it is.
What coat types do cockapoos have?
Three, broadly. A flat or straight coat, closer to a spaniel, sheds a little and mats least. A wavy or fleece coat, the most common, is soft and loose and tangles at friction points. A curly or wool coat, closer to a poodle, sheds least but mats fastest and needs the most brushing. Two puppies from one litter can have different coats.
When does a cockapoo start matting?
Usually between six and twelve months, when the adult coat comes in under the puppy coat. Owners often find the coat has knotted in a fortnight when it was fine for months. Groomers commonly recommend a shorter clip, or more frequent visits, through this change.
What styles do groomers offer?
A teddy bear cut leaves a rounded face and similar length all over. A puppy cut is even and practical, often 1 to 2 cm. A spaniel-style cut has a shorter body with longer ears and legs. Show the groomer a photo, and agree a length in centimetres or by clipper blade or comb number rather than words like "short".
How long does a cockapoo groom take?
Usually two to three hours in a salon for a full groom, less for a toy cockapoo in a short clip, more for a large cockapoo in a long or knotted coat. Most of that is bathing and drying: a fleece coat has to be dried straight, section by section, before it can be clipped evenly. A mobile groomer, with one dog at a time and no waiting for collection, is often done in about two hours.
How do you brush a cockapoo properly?
Use a slicker brush to lift the coat in sections, then a metal comb to check you have reached the skin. If the comb catches, the knot is still there. Concentrate on behind the ears, the collar line, armpits, the inside of the back legs and the tail. A coat that looks fluffy on the surface can be matted underneath.
Common questions
How much does a cockapoo groom cost?
The middle half of 37 published cockapoo and cavapoo full groom prices is £50 to £60 (October 2026), depending on size and coat condition.
How often should a cockapoo be groomed?
Every 6 to 12 weeks for a full groom, at the shorter end for a curly or long coat.
Do cockapoos shed?
Usually little, but it depends on coat type. Flat-coated cockapoos shed more than curly ones.
Can I let my cockapoo's coat grow long?
Yes, if you brush it to the skin several times a week. Otherwise a long coat mats and ends up being clipped short.
