Matted Dog: What to Do and What a Groomer Will Charge

Light mats can be brushed out for a small extra charge; mats tight to the skin are usually clipped off, which is kinder. Never cut a mat with scissors at home: the skin is pulled up into it.

What should you do if your dog is matted?

Book a groomer and tell them it is matted when you book. Groomers charge for it as a flat surcharge, with a middle half of £10 to £16 across 20 published charges, or by time, £10 to £14 per 15 minutes across 6 published rates (October 2026). Heavy or tight matting is usually clipped off short. Do not cut mats out with scissors at home: skin is pulled up into the mat and is easily cut.

Where do mats form first?

Wherever the coat rubs or stays damp: behind the ears, under the collar and harness, in the armpits, on the inside of the back legs, under the tail, and between the toes. A dog that wears a harness every day can have a band of felted coat under it while the rest looks fine. Feel these areas with your fingers once a week; a mat feels like a firm, flat lump close to the skin.

Why do groomers shave matted dogs?

Because it is the kinder option. A mat tight to the skin pulls with every movement; brushing it out hurts and can take hours, leaving the skin red and sore. Clipping under the mats takes the pressure off at once. Groomers call this "humanity before vanity". The coat grows back, usually in a few months, and can be kept longer from then with regular brushing.

What can a groomer find under mats?

Sore or broken skin, hot spots, fleas, grass seeds and, in severe cases, wounds. After a matted coat is clipped the skin can be itchy or red for a few days, and some dogs scratch or shake their head. Ask the groomer to show you anything they find, and see a vet if the skin is broken or does not settle.

Will I have to sign anything?

Many groomers ask owners of matted dogs to sign a short consent form, agreeing that the coat may need to be clipped short and that clipping close to matted skin can cause irritation. This is normal practice, not a sign the groomer expects a problem.

How do you stop it happening again?

Brush to the skin, with a comb to check, two or three times a week for continuously growing coats. Concentrate on friction points: behind the ears, under the collar and harness, the armpits, the inside of the back legs and the tail. Dry the coat after swimming or rain. Book grooms at your coat's interval: every 4 to 8 weeks for a poodle, 6 to 12 for a poodle cross.

Common questions

Can matted dog hair be brushed out?

Light knots, yes. Mats tight to the skin are usually clipped, because brushing them out is painful.

How much do groomers charge for matted dogs?

A flat surcharge with a middle half of £10 to £16, or £10 to £14 per 15 minutes by time, from published charges in October 2026. Tight mats are usually clipped short.

Is a matted dog a welfare problem?

Severe matting causes pain and skin damage. Owners have a legal duty of care for their dog's welfare.

Why is my dog itchy after being shaved?

Clipping close to matted skin can leave it irritated for a few days. If it does not settle, or the skin is broken, see a vet.
