Can a Dog Groomer Clean Teeth? Brushing vs Scaling

A groomer can brush your dog's teeth. Cleaning below the gum line and removing teeth with instruments are acts of veterinary surgery that only a vet may perform.

Can a dog groomer clean my dog's teeth?

A groomer can brush your dog's teeth with a dog toothpaste, and many offer it as an add-on for a small charge. A groomer cannot scale teeth below the gum line or remove teeth: under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 these are acts of veterinary surgery, which only a vet may perform. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) says so in its statement on "anaesthesia-free dental procedures", published in February 2026.

What is anaesthesia-free dental cleaning?

It is scraping or ultrasonically scaling a dog's teeth while the dog is awake, sometimes sold as "non-anaesthetic dental" or "ultrasonic teeth cleaning". The RCVS states that these procedures cannot allow a full examination of the mouth, do not clean the area below the gum line where dental disease does its damage, may damage the tissue around the teeth, may cause pain or distress, and could be considered misleading if sold as a dental treatment.

Why does the gum line matter?

Dental disease is mostly below the gum line, in the pocket around each tooth. Cleaning there needs sharp instruments or a water-cooled scaler, and even small movements of an awake dog's head can damage the tissue that holds the tooth in. Scraping off the visible tartar makes the teeth look cleaner. The RCVS says it is not effective against dental disease, and can delay the treatment that is.

What does a vet do instead?

A vet examines the whole mouth under general anaesthetic, often with dental X-rays, then scales and polishes above and below the gum line and treats or removes damaged teeth. The RCVS notes that some oral problems, including early cancers, can only be found this way, and that modern anaesthesia, properly monitored, carries a low risk.

What can you do at home?

Daily brushing with a dog toothbrush or finger brush and dog toothpaste (never human toothpaste) is the most effective home care. Start slowly with a puppy. A groomer brushing teeth every few weeks helps, but does not replace daily brushing or a vet's dental check.

Teeth: who should do what?

Brushing is something owners and groomers can both do to keep a dog's mouth healthy. Anything that needs a general anaesthetic or sedation, including scaling and polishing, should only be done by a qualified vet.

Common questions

Is it legal for a groomer to scale teeth?

Scaling below the gum line and extracting teeth with instruments are acts of veterinary surgery under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. Only a vet may perform them.

Is ultrasonic teeth cleaning without anaesthetic safe?

The RCVS says anaesthesia-free dental procedures cannot clean below the gum line, may damage tissue and may cause pain or distress.

Can a groomer brush my dog's teeth?

Yes. Brushing with dog toothpaste is lawful and a common add-on.

How much does a vet dental cost?

It varies widely by practice and by what is found. Ask your vet for an estimate after a check.
