Choosing Professional Dog Clippers: Blades, Speed, Cordless

Most professional dog clippers take detachable A5-type blades, run at one to five speeds, and come corded or cordless. Blade numbers run backwards: a #10 leaves 1.5 mm, a #4F about 9.5 mm.

How do you choose professional dog clippers?

Decide four things: blade system (most professional clippers take detachable A5-type blades, which swap between brands), power and speed (a heavy coat needs more torque), corded or cordless, and weight and heat, since you will hold it for hours a day. Then check warranty, servicing and how easy it is to get the clipper repaired quickly.

How do blade numbers work?

Higher numbers cut shorter. Common approximate cutting lengths: #40, 0.25 mm (surgical, close work); #30, 0.5 mm; #15, 1.2 mm; #10, 1.5 mm (hygiene areas, pads, poodle faces); #7F, 3.2 mm; #5F, 6.3 mm; #4F, 9.5 mm; #3F, 13 mm. An "F" marks a full-toothed finishing blade that leaves a smoother finish than a skip-toothed one. Snap-on combs over a #30 or #40 blade give longer lengths.

Corded or cordless?

Corded clippers give constant power, suit long sessions and heavy coats, and never run flat mid-groom. Cordless clippers are lighter to handle and easier around the head and legs; many groomers use a cordless trimmer for detail and a corded clipper for bodywork. For a mobile van, check the charger works off your power setup.

Do speed, heat and noise matter?

Yes, for the dog and for your wrist. Two or more speeds let you run slower on the face and faster on the body. Higher speed means more heat at the blade: check blade temperature on your wrist often, and use a coolant spray or swap blades, because a hot blade burns skin. Quieter, lower-vibration models suit nervous dogs and save your wrist.

How do you look after clipper blades?

Clean hair out after each dog, oil the blade, and use a disinfectant spray between dogs. Blades dull faster on dirty coats; clip only clean, dry hair. Send blades for sharpening when they start to drag or leave lines, and keep spares so one blade away for sharpening does not stop work.
